Kovalam trip turns tragic as waves wash away 2 students
Back On: 14th Aug 2012

A pleasure trip to the Kovalam beach ended in tragedy for a group of medical students on Saturday evening after one of them drowned while taking a dip in the sea, while another went missing. Police sources said that a group of 13 students from a private medical college in Kancheepuram had gone to Kovalam to celebrate the birthday of one of them. While 10 of them stayed on the sands, three students — Nanda Kishore, Deepak Kannan and Balakumaran — all 19 years of age, entered the waters for a swim.

Police said the three were suddenly caught in strong currents and dragged into the water. Hearing their screams, their friends alerted a group of fishermen from the nearby hamlet, who took their boats to find the three. The fishermen then rescued Deepak and Balakumaran and rushed them to a nearby hospital.

However, Balakumaran, son of Shanmugasamy, a farmer from Virudhunagar district, was declared brought dead, while Deepak was admitted to the ICU, where his condition is said to be serious. Nanda Kishore is missing. Two teams, with the help of the Coast Guard, have been deployed to search for the boy. A case has been registered.
