Computer education for 7 lakh govt school students
Back On: 24th Jan 2013

NEW DELHI: A proposal to provide computer education to 710 Delhi government schools was cleared by the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) on Monday. The project that costs Rs 99.67 lakh will impact about 7 lakh students.

The proposal had been postponed last month after finance minister A K Walia asked the education department for an evaluation report on the status of computer education in the existing 400 schools.

A monitoring committee, including two experts, has been set up. "We have asked the education department to conduct regular checks. This time we have invited tenders from companies with a turnover of Rs 20 crore. Larger and well-established companies who have a better reputation are being invited," Walia said.

According to the evaluation report, the pass percentage of students had been much higher in computers than other subjects. While the pass percentage for science students in Class XII was 62%, 80% for Arts and 78% for Commerce, students with computers had a percentage of 98%.

The contract is likely to go to a Bangalore-based company. The company is expected to provide software, hardware and teachers. "Each school will be given 10 computers for the students and one for the principal's room," an official said. The cost per student is Rs 20 per month.
