DakshinaChitra is celebrating the Adiperukku and Ayyanar Festival. Adiperukku or Pathinettam Perukku is a way of paying tribute to the life-sustaining properties of water and is celebrated on the 18th day of the Tamil month 'Adi'. The 'Adi thiruvizha' focuses on the significance of water in everyday life. It also marks the onset of the monsoons. 'Ayyanar' is a folk deity of Tamil Nadu, who assumes great significance in the lives of the people in villages. To honour the deity, terracotta animals like horses, elephants, bulls etc are offered to him. It needs to be reemphasized again and again how our ancestors understood nature and worked in complete communion with it. - Folk performance: Sukra Dance troupe will be entertaining the audience with Kavadi, Karagam, Silambattam and Thappattam. The performance timings are 11.30am, 12.30 and 3 pm. - Display and sale of Palm leaf crafts by Eco-Pro Zone from Pulicat, Coconut shell crafts by Sridhar of Creative crafts, and sale of Terracota jewellery is also organised. This village and water festival is celebrated with much enthusiasm every year at DakshinaChitra. A procession taking terracotta offerings to the Ayyanar shrine at DakshinaChitra will be taken out on Sunday August 3th. As the dates coincided with the Children's Mela there were also puppet shows, magic shows, bullock cart rides, glass blowing demo, palm leaf demo and theatre arts for children
